The Music Library accepts applications for Student Library Assistants (SLA) on an ongoing basis. Although we tend to hire new SLAs between semesters or academic years, feel free to submit your application at any time. When we resume actively hiring, we will review all applications submitted in the interim.

Position Description

Position reports to: Daytime Supervisor & Evening Supervisor

Work Schedule: Varies according to class schedule and the needs of the library. Minimum of 10 hours per week and willingness to work at least one night or weekend shift if requested.

Purpose: Manage the circulation desk; check-in and check-out materials, shelving, shelf reading, and provide basic patron assistance in locating materials and utilizing library research tools. Take part in various student library projects. When no supervisor is available, student will be required to assist patrons with a greater variety of services.

Duties

Circulation Management: 50% of work

· Primary duty is to the circulation desk. Assisting library patrons in checking in and out materials. Referring issues to the supervisor on duty as necessary.

· Keep daytime supervisor notified of any missing items; filling out search slips for items found missing, occasionally searching for lost items and assisting patrons in finding misshelved items.

· Keep day and evening supervisor informed of any damaged books or other binding issues.

· Notifying patrons of any blocks or fines on their account and referring them to staff if they have any questions.

· Teaching patrons to search for materials when no supervisor is available.

· Filling interlibrary loan requests and library express requests as requested by the supervisor.

Data Entry/Projects: 25% of work

· Assisting library staff in preparing order records as needed by the music librarians.

· Taking part in a variety of projects that include data entry skills. Song Indexing, Analysis Indexing, Inventories or other various projects.

Shelving and Shelf Reading: 15% or work

· Must shelve all books used and returned within the time frame of their shift.

· Shelf reading is assigned at the beginning of each semester; the student worker must complete their assigned area by the end of exam week. This area is also their primary responsibility to keep neat and tidy. Books must be kept straight and it is expected that the student worker straighten their area at least weekly.

· Summer workers need to assist in the shifting of the entire collection as well as extensive cleaning projects. Involves climbing ladders, moving large numbers of books and dusting.

Cleaning: 10% of work

· Students who work the weekend shifts will have regular cleaning duties that must be completed during their shift. Notify the supervisor of any allergies that may interfere with cleaning projects.

· Performing any cleaning task assigned by the supervisor. Examples include dusting shelves, straightening books, vacuuming, and cleaning table and desk surfaces.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

Must be a current UT Student willing to work at least 10 hours per week and at least one night or weekend shift.

· Ability to work well with the public; excellent communication skills, multi-tasking skills, attention to detail; ability to work within a team framework.

· Must be punctual, reliable, and notify supervisors ahead of time if time off is needed.

· Demonstrated experience with computers; keyboarding skills. Must be willing to do some data entry.

· Willing to cover other SLA’s shifts when possible.

Preferred

· Music major, minor, or prior experience in music (high school band, orchestra or choir)

· Experience with both Macintosh and Windows-based computers and software including Word and Excel

· Library work experience or library user experience.
