Medbery Makerspace Safety Guidelines & User Agreement
Please note that access and use of the Medbery Makerspace is a privilege and violation of policies could result in access being revoked. When entering, you will be asked to sign in and agree to this general use and safety policy. It is your responsibility to use makerspace equipment and tools safely.
General Safety
- Secure all scarves, neckties, loose-fitting clothing, or jewelry when using machinery in the Makerspace. These items can be caught in the equipment and cause injury.
- Keep hands and arms away from machinery during operation.
- Never use a broken tool or machine. If you notice a tool or machine is broken, inform a makerspace staff member immediately.
- Keep the floor clear of clutter, wires, and/or trip hazards.
- If you are unsure about how to safely operate machines or equipment, ask a staff member.
- Safety goggles, gloves, and masks are all available for your use. It is your responsibility to use the proper safety equipment for your project. Not sure what to use? Just ask!
- Never use the makerspace while inebriated or detrimentally sleep deprived.
Makerspace Policies
- Only current University of Tennessee Knoxville students, faculty, and staff with a current UTK ID are eligible to use the Medbery Makerspace.
- All users of the Makerspace must adhere to the IT0110 Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources policy.
- The UT Libraries are not responsible for anything left behind in the Makerspace. If you need to leave a work-in-progress, please place in designated storage area.
- UT Libraries cannot guarantee confidentiality of designs or work created in the makerspace.
- All equipment and products are provided on an "as is" basis. Please report issues with equipment to makerspace staff.’
- Some free consumable materials are provided for use with specific equipment. Any consumables provided will be clearly listed on the Makerspace Guide. Users are expected to provide all other materials needed for projects. Consumables will be replenished periodically according to budget allocations. Specific colors and quantities of provided consumables cannot be guaranteed.
- Take It or Leave It bins are provided for fabric scraps, trim, yarn, and other project materials. Items are free for use by anyone in the Makerspace. Talk to makerspace staff if you are interested in donating.
- Certification is required to be permitted to equipment including sewing machines (all models and types), cricut machines, 3D printers. Meet with staff to review the basics of using the machines to get certified.
When using the Medbery Makerspace, I agree to:
- Ask for help when I am uncertain of what to do or how to operate equipment.
- Check in and check out with a makerspace staff member when entering and exiting.
- Follow safety guidelines and use appropriate safety gear when operating tools and equipment.
- Not make alterations or perform repairs on any equipment.
- Operate only those machines and equipment I have been certified to use.
- Work and behave in a way that protects myself and the safety of others.
- Take responsibility for my own materials and property.
- Not steal from the makerspace.
- Use the makerspace for maker activities only.
- Report accidents and injuries to makerspace staff immediately.
- Respect and abide by all UTK policies regarding intellectual property, lawful purposes, and more including the IT0110 Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources policy.
- Never use the makerspace while inebriated or detrimentally sleep deprived.
- Not use the makerspace to create any objects that endanger anyone.
