Medbery Makerspace Use & Safety Policy
Access to the Medbery Makerspace is a privilege. By using this space, you agree to abide by the policies outlined below. Failure to follow these policies may result in restricted access, suspension, or permanent loss of makerspace privileges.
Purpose
The Medbery Makerspace provides tools, materials, and resources to foster creativity, innovation, and learning for individuals in our community. To ensure fair and equitable access, we have established the following policies regarding the use of the makerspace and its materials.
Eligibility & Access
- Only current University of Tennessee, Knoxville students, faculty, and staff with a valid UTK ID may use the Medbery Makerspace.
- Users must sign in upon entering.
- All users agree to follow this General Use & Safety Policy and relevant university policies, including:
- IT0002 Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources
General Safety Guidelines
- Use of the makerspace while inebriated or detrimentally sleep-deprived is prohibited.
- Secure scarves, neckties, loose clothing, or jewelry when operating machinery.
- Keep hands, arms, and other body parts clear of moving machinery.
- Never use broken or malfunctioning equipment — report it to staff immediately.
- Maintain a clutter-free workspace and keep floors clear of trip hazards and wires.
- Use appropriate safety gear (goggles, gloves, masks), which is provided. Ask staff if unsure.
- If you are uncertain how to operate a machine or tool, ask for assistance.
Equipment Use & Certification
- Certification is required before using:
- Sewing machines (all models and types)
- Cricut machines
- 3D printers (all models and types)
- Users must not alter or attempt to repair any machinery. Please notify staff if there is an issue.
- Ask for help whenever you’re unsure how to use a tool or machine.
- Makerspace staff are available to review equipment basics and guide users through certifications.
Materials & Supply Use
Personal Use Only
- Supplies provided by the makerspace are for personal, non-commercial use only:
- No mass production, resale, or profit-driven projects.
- This aligns with UT’s IT0002 Acceptable Use Policy.
- Use materials responsibly and in moderation to preserve availability for others.
Organization Use
- University organizations may use makerspace equipment if they supply their own materials.
- All users must follow general makerspace policies and equipment safety guidelines.
Supply Limits
- Users are subject to supply limits per semester, which vary by material type and availability.
- Makerspace staff will communicate and update these limits as needed.
- Users who exceed limits must provide their own materials.
Exceptions
- Users may request exceptions to use materials for:
- Educational workshops
- Community-based projects
- Other non-commercial purposes
- All requests must be submitted to hodgesmaker@utk.edu for review.
Consumables & Shared Resources
- Some free consumables are available for specific equipment. Availability may vary based on budget.
- Specific colors or quantities cannot be guaranteed.
- "Take It or Leave It" bins offer donated items like fabric scraps, trim, yarn, etc., for public use.
- Speak with staff if you'd like to donate.
User Responsibilities
By using the Medbery Makerspace, you agree to:
- Operate only machines you are certified to use.
- Ask for help when uncertain about tools or procedures.
- Follow all safety guidelines and use appropriate protective gear.
- Take responsibility for your own materials and property.
- Use the makerspace for maker activities only.
- Report accidents or injuries to staff immediately.
- Treat the space and other users with respect and care.
- Not use the makerspace to create objects that endanger others.
- Not steal from the makerspace or remove any makerspace tools or equipment, even for a short time.
- Abide by all UTK policies, including those related to:
- Intellectual property
- Lawful purposes
- Information technology use
Liability & Confidentiality
- The UT Libraries are not responsible for personal belongings left in the makerspace.
- Work-in-progress should be placed in designated storage areas.
- UT Libraries cannot guarantee confidentiality of designs or projects created in the makerspace.
- All tools and equipment are provided as-is; report any issues to staff.
Final Agreement
By entering and using the Medbery Makerspace, you acknowledge that you understand and agree to follow all the policies stated above. Makerspace access is contingent on your adherence to these guidelines.
