I am a nurse scientist that studies neurodevelopmental outcomes of infants born preterm. Language directed toward infants during early infancy has been shown to improve cognitive outcomes in this population. Encouraging language exposure by both caregivers and parents is one of the research strategies I use to mitigate this known morbidity associated with preterm birth.

After I have taught about, read about and listened to Louis Armstrong for my entire life as a student, musician, and teacher at UT, this book is a reminder of the joy and artistry of one of the greatest artists in the history of jazz.
On the occasion of Kelvin Massey's promotion to Senior Lecturer
This is an important primary source in regard to J.R.R. Tolkien's writing of The Lord of the Rings that wasn't readily available to me when I was writing my dissertation about Tolkien. It deserves to be readily available to anyone doing research upon Tolkien at UTK in the future.

On the occasion of Kevin Sukanek's promotion to Distinguished Lecturer
This book has had an enormous impact on my teaching philosophy. Even if you aren't in mathematics nor a teacher, I really feel everyone can take something from this book.
On the occasion of Kris Bronstad's tenure and promotion to Associate Professor
I chose this book because it's clever, clear, useful, and colorful-- a joy to look at. It's like taking a glimpse at the mind of a truly remarkable and funny artist and walking through how her creative thought process works. In my ideal world, instructional interactions would all look something like this.

Over the years I have really wondered how to better engage students inside the classroom. I really wanted to make them excited for the subject of Business and Professional Communication. So, I started reading books about how to better "spark their learning". This book really resonated with me as a way to really engage students, help them become emotionally invested in the material, help motivate them to learn, and help them retain the information for years to come.

This book is relevant to all Americans as it explains the social problems we are experiencing today. The sooner we come to terms with this new reality, and we act to remediate these social problems, the sooner we will start creating the New America we all dream to have.

Clarice Lispector is my favorite Brazilian author. The beauty and power of her writing have kept me company in every moment of my adult life. In 2016, the Department of Modern Foreign Languages & Literatures accepted my suggestion to celebrate the work of the author who is considered one of the greatest Jewish writers in the world. The translator of The Complete Stories, Katrina Dodson, was the keynote speaker of the event, and for a week we held events at UT, the Lawson McGhee Public Library, and The Central Collective. Participating so closely in the organization of the Lispecorfest is one of the many wonderful memories I will keep when the time comes for me to leave UT. To have The Complete Stories book-plated in my honor humbles me.
