Paul C. Hess mentored dozens of graduate students who went on to successful careers in academia and industry. In his classic textbook, he applies the same care invested in his mentoring relationships to communicate a convoluted subject in an intuitive way.

Was the first significant contribution on applying positive psychology and strengths-oriented research to the practice of school counseling specifically. Reflective of my passion to push counseling away from only a deficit orientation.

I chose this book because it was one of my beloved mother's favorite books. My mother loved reading. She loved learning. She loved traveling and learning about other places, other cultures, and others' lives. And she encouraged me to love the same. Despite the fact that, for most of my K-12 years I performed poorly, and few of my teachers predicted a particularly bright future for me, my mother believed in my abilities and encouraged me at every stage of my journey. Her love for me, belief in me, and support of me are the reasons for my success. Without her steadfast love and support I would not be who I am and where I am today. I try to live my life so as to make my mama proud. Although I lost her in 2009, I have no doubt that she would immensely proud of this accomplishment. So I have chosen Anne of Green Gables to honor the memory of Lynda Danner Stokes, my mama, my biggest supporter, and my best friend.

It is crucial that all of us - faculty, students, staff, and administrators alike - prioritize holistic well-being and learn to take care of ourselves. As an adult education scholar, I strongly encourage lifelong learning, life-wide learning, and life-deep learning. We are holistic beings who constantly learn, but we often neglect self-care, which is essential for balancing our work, life, and learning. This book reminds us that learning is a way of life!

This is one of the best works of anthropology in the modern era, a powerful and encyclopedic account of the rise of the modern world. It engages theory and ethnography in a manner that has set a high standard for the field ever since its initial publication in 1982.

Dr. Paul Kalanithi was a friend and colleague. He wrote this beautiful memoir about a life dedicated to science and medicine that ended too soon after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. I will never forget talking to him before his diagnosis about his plans for his future lab and practice. This book perfectly captures the importance of relationships for a happy and successful life.

First book I read to my daughter Lana in the hospital after she was born. Reading this with her many many times after kept me grounded and reminded me there was more to life than just work. Without her, this academic journey would not be the same.
