Description
This Graduate Student Library Assistant position in coordination with the Digital Collections Administrator will have oversight over training other SLAs and providing quality control over digitized work.
This position supports Digital Production by digitizing material for the Libraries’ Digital Collections and assisting in day-to-day operations of the production lab. The GSLA will digitize a variety of material types, such as text publications, photographs, sheet music, theses, drawings, fragile primary source documents, booklets, slides, etc. They will also edit images, transcribe texts, and occasionally create basic metadata.
This position will operate Fujifilm and Phase One cameras, Fujitsu ADF scanners, and all other scanning accessories. They will also provide training and troubleshooting on these systems and update related documentation. Other duties will include quality control of SLA work and advanced file conversion and organization using command-line tools.
We are looking for a student who is detail-oriented, has above-average computer skills, and an interest in learning new technologies. Desired hours and schedule are generally set by the graduate student library assistant based on their availability.
Hours coverage is needed: 8:00am - 5:30pm, Monday - Friday.
Responsibilities & Duties
• Digitize various material types (text, photographs, slides, etc.)
• Quality control of scanned materials
• Train SLAs on scanning systems
• Convert and migrate files using command-line tools
• Edit images and files using Adobe or CaptureOne
• Data entry
Required Qualifications
• Detail-oriented
• Ability to troubleshoot
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Experience with macOS, Windows, or Linux
• Must be able to work a minimum two-hour shift during regular departmental hours (Monday-Friday 8am-5pm)
• Must be enrolled in classes for summer or fall semester to work during the summer
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with Adobe Photoshop
• Experience with DSLR, mirrorless, or medium-format cameras
• Experience with Python or batch scripting
• Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Drive
