Big Orange STEM Saturday for High School Students CANCELLED

March 10, 2020
!

Cancelled

Cancelled as part of the University of Tennessee’s response to the COVID-19 coronavirus. Follow university updates at www.utk.edu/coronavirus.

High school students will explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at Big Orange STEM Saturday, April 4, at UT’s John C. Hodges Library.

The keynote activity at the free half-day conference will be a playful group experiment led by Ernie Roberts, the on-air host for Mathline, the East Tennessee PBS live call-in show that helps students improve their math skills.

Leading up to the keynote presentation, students can attend two 30-minute “breakout” sessions of their choice on various topics:

  • Esports and gaming at the UT Libraries
  • Bringing anatomy to life with a 3D virtual anatomy table
  • Learning research ethics through a role-playing game
  • What do industrial engineers do?
  • Using census data to reveal and tell compelling stories about our communities
  • Using chess to promote girls’ interest in STEM fields

Many of the attending students, if they eventually enroll in college, would be first-generation college students (the first in their families to attend an institution of higher education). Representatives from UT programs and community STEM organizations will be on hand at a midday exhibitor fair to answer questions about college admissions as well as STEM majors and careers.

Big Orange STEM Saturday is presented annually by the UT Libraries. The event is co-hosted by CAPS (the College Access and Persistence Services Outreach Center). CAPS helps low-income and first-generation students overcome social, academic, financial, and cultural barriers to securing a college degree.
