HathiTrust Gives UT Users Temporary Access to More than a Million e-Books

March 31, 2020

The UT Libraries’ membership in an international digital repository is yielding an extra dividend in these troubled times. While UT classes remain online in response to the COVID-19 emergency, HathiTrust will allow unprecedented access to digital content preserved by the shared repository.

In addition to the UT Libraries’ already robust electronic collections, through our partnership with HathiTrust we will now be able to provide faculty, staff, and students with electronic access to 1,466,421 books for which UT Libraries owns a print version.

HathiTrust, a shared digital repository for content contributed by major academic and research libraries, announced its Emergency Temporary Access Service on March 30. The service makes it possible for member library patrons to obtain lawful access to specific digital materials in HathiTrust that correspond to physical books held by their own library.

UT students, faculty, and staff will, upon logging-in to HathiTrust, have access to copyrighted titles that the library owns and for which we have been able to identify a match through our ongoing holdings analysis.

Users will be able to read the book online, in the web browser, but will not be able to download the work in full.

Users may “check out” a book for one hour. Access will renew automatically at the end of the hour unless another user requests the book.

Books available to UT users through the Emergency Temporary Access Service will be marked “Temporary Access.” HathiTrust books marked “Full View” are freely and fully available to UT users.

Visit HathiTrust at hathitrust.org. Click on the yellow “LOG IN” button to search for books that are accessible to UT users.

More information is available at hathitrust.org/ETAS-User-Information.
