On the occasion of Dr. Alexander Michael Feldt's promotion to Distinguished Lecturer
Much of my teaching philosophy has been shaped by my experiences at a small, liberal arts college as an undergraduate and the fact that the majority of my students at UT are not majors and most are likely to not take another philosophy class. Thus, it is important to me that they understand the value of taking courses like mine and other general education courses. An understanding of that value and our call as teachers is laid out in Roth's book -- that we aren't here to teach students to have a particular job, but to give them the general skills to contribute to society more broadly and promote civic virtue.

This book provides a great overview of customer value and the importance of making strategic decisions with the needs of the customer in mind. Day and Moorman offer four customer value imperatives for companies to consider: Be a customer value leader. Innovate new value for customers. Capitalize on the customer as an asset. Capitalize on the brand as an asset. I routinely assign this book in my Executive MBA marketing classes and the concepts are applicable and well-received.
Strategy from the Outside In: Profiting from Customer Value
On the occasion of Dr. Amy Rauer's promotion to Professor
A beautifully written book about the strength and significance of our so-called 'weak ties'. As a close relationships scholar, this body of work reminds me that although traditional methodologies may overlook the people who populate our day-to-day lives, the impact of these consequential strangers in supporting and helping us maintain our closest ties cannot and should not be underestimated.
Consequential Strangers: The Power of People Who Don't Seem to Matter ... But Really Do
On the occasion of Dr. Ashley M. Stokes's tenure as Professor
As a child I was fascinated with anatomy and physiology, which I was able to study in depth due to having hunting and fishing as part of our family activities. I was given Gray's Anatomy for Christmas one year and I poured over the images, especially of the heart and vascular networks that provide life-sustaining circulation. It should be no surprise that now I'm a professor in veterinary medicine as a DVM and also have my PhD in cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology. Perhaps the selection of this book will foster in others the same curiosity and fascination that I have for science and the wonders of nature.
On the occasion of Dr. Bob DuBois's promotion to Senior Lecturer

We each have a road before us. Those with principles get to a life they want and are proud of, while others settle for what is convenient. Self-discipline is inevitable in the journey to make the world better. Be consistent in your beliefs and provide explanation when they change. In all things, have a sense of humility and open yourself to appreciate pointed criticism and use it to improve.
